About Me

Me

I graduated from the California Institute of Technology back in 1988, and since then I’ve been writing software in a variety of fields from computer graphics and acoustical analysis to server-side software, and more recently mobile software development.

My wife and I recently moved to the Raleigh area after living in Los Angeles for nearly 30 years. We now live within walking distance of the Falls Lake hiking trails, where I work as a freelance software developer (recent customers include Spark.com, the company behind JDate and Christian Mingle), and YP.com, where I’m working on the iPhone app.

My primary interest include how we interact with computers–both as software developers and as users. I’m fascinated by how we as developers make work harder for ourselves (and I’m convinced most “productivity tips” we follow make life harder, not easier), and how we as designers develop applications for users. (Or rather, how we design things to be pretty without considering the user at all.)

I’m also convinced that the way we think about assembling software is why so many projects fail.

If you are interested in hiring me as a freelance developer feel free to check out some of the projects I’ve published on GitHub; I’m not the most active person there but I do maintain some examples of my work. Feel free to contact me for a recent resume.
